Change Charity are an organisation who create opportunities for people with learning disabilities to enable them to be fully included in society by working, volunteering and living life fully. Working towards a world without barriers for those with learning disabilities; Change is an incredible charity with strong brand values and drive.
We were approached by Change Charity to help design and develop a brand new, accessibility focused website to help the charity improve and continue their work in creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The site needed to represent the charity’s strong brand and ideologies and encompass multiple opportunities for donation generation.
As well as delivering key accessibility features for members of Change, the charity also work alongside a number of high profile clients and partners including Comic Relief, the Department of Health and NHS England to support their work towards empowering people with learning disabilities. As such, the website needed to offer lots of information, resources and downloads in a clear, easily navigable format, with eCommerce functionality in place to allow various guides and resources to be purchased.
With all of this resource on offer, it was important that we optimized the site at every opportunity, to ensure the number of products on offer did not slow the site down and compromise the level of on-site optimisation.
We consulted with the charity’s in house design time to help create a responsive, digital solution that met the needs of their audiences, ultimately creative an inclusive user experience.
From the very early stages of this project the creative solutions centred on the aim of delivering great usability and AA grade accessibility. This involved implementing some key functionality and features including an accessibility tool bar, which we made available across every page of the website.
This enables the user to change font sizes, choose font and background colours within a plain text view of the site. Moreover we had to ensure the final site design was screen reader friendly and accessible through the access keys H, M and S.
The website was built using Kentico v8, an industry leading CMS platform that delivered the required functionality for updating, changing and managing content on the Change website, including products available in the shop.
The finished site made use of Kenitco's eCommerce functionality which allows content users to manage, update and change products in the shop; as well as providing customers on the front end with an easy and simple user journey from browsing products to successfully purchasing them. This functionality also allows users to purchase subscriptions which in turn updates their accounts with a number of 'credits' which can be spent in the Change Charity Gallery.
Alongside these features it was also important a “donate” button was provided to allow the charity’s supporters to easily contribute to their funding.
Accessibility is at the forefront of the site’s functionality, usability and design, as it such it features a variety of accessibility options including; colour changes and text size changes. The website is built on a secure and powerful content management system; which ensures all of the site content can be easily managed going forward. We implemented specific functionality including eCommerce, site search and donation features to help generate revenue.
The primary result of working with Change was the delivery of a highly accessible website offering a simple yet effective user experience that ensures the website is a tool and resource that works for everyone. The Kentico CMS has also improved the website's content management functionality and allowed for the team at Change to set up multiple user logins to improve the management of their digital presence.
Thanks to the focus on ensuring the site was also well optimised for search engines, Change have also benefited from increased traffic to the site and better brand awareness.
